Bovine Colostrum for Infants

Novel scientific research

BioDane Pharma and a team of Chinese and Danish investigators are running clinical trials giving bovine colostrum to preterm infants with birth weights between 1000 and 1800 g, or born between 27+0 and 32+6 weeks of gestational age, in order to promote feeding and intestinal health in these babies. Bovine colostrum contains higher amounts of protein, growth factors and immuno-regulatory components (e.g. immunoglobulins), and has been used in many other situations to promote health.

Key USPs

The trial investigates whether using Bovine Colostrum as nutrition for preterm infants in the first weeks of life is safe, tolerable, and helps to provide nutrients and gut maturation, particularly in situations when mother’s milk is not in sufficient amounts/unavailable
BC products have had a beneficial effect on the intestinal environment in preterm pigs based on improvements in intestinal structure, digestive and absorptive functions, the microbiota, and by reduced level of inflammatory markers. BC products, modified to meet the nutritional requirements of preterm infants, may serve as valuable alternatives to mother’s milk during the first critical days after birth

Relevance for Nestlé

Early stage research project that could provide strong foundation for Baby Nutrition and Health Sciences
Aligned to first 1000 days and to focus on gut health
This current study is a feasibility pilot study and the investigators hypothesized that supplementing BC to MM is safe and tolerable when used within the first 10-14 days of life in infants
The Bovine Colustrum powder to be used in this study is donated from a Danish company, Biofiber Damino.

Consumer need addressed

When a baby is born preterm, the process of gut maturation is interrupted as the mother’s first milk is not yet available. Due to the immaturity of the gut, the preterm baby does not tolerate infant formula and early introduction may cause severe gastrointestinal problems
The first nutrition of premature infants is a major challenge in NICUs world wide; IV feeding is often the only option and there is a need for a “first nutrition” for pre-term babies that is well tolerated by the infant and will help mature the gut
